♦ Living Expenses: Much lower than in English-speaking countries. Savings can be substantially higher than in OECD countries, depending on the residential area and lifestyle.

♦ Visa & Work Permit: The hiring educational institution pays for and handles the procedures. Necessary documents to receive a work permit are a diploma and/or transcript from your last school of graduation in your country of origin, along with your criminal background check which you will need to apply for yourself. The cost for doing the background check, if applied for in Vietnam, can be rather high, and must be processed through your consulate in Vietnam, which can take up to several weeks. Therefore, it would be preferable to have this prepared prior to leaving your country of origin and dated just before your departure. Also desirable for long-term residence would be three or more original, sealed diplomas and transcripts from your last school of graduation.

♦ Visa & Work Permit: 고용되는 교육기관에서 수속비까지 지불하여 모두 수속해 줍니다. 노동허가를 받기 위해서는 출신국의 최종학교 졸업증명서와 지문조회카드를 통한 범죄기록이 필요한데 이 범죄기록지문카드는 본인이 직접 준비해야 하며 베트남 현지에서 하고자 하면 비용이 많이 들고 베트남 내의 출신국 영사관을 통해야 하므로 오랜 시간이 소요되어 본인이 직접 본국을 출국하기 직전의 날짜가 찍힌 최신의 것으로 준비해 오는 것이 필요합니다. 최종학교 졸업증명서와 성적증명서는 개봉하지 않은 것으로 각 3통 이상 가져오는 것이 장기체류를 위해 바람직 합니다.

♦ English Teachers in Vietnam and HCMC: Most are from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. There are also a number of English teachers from the Philippines currently employed at public elementary, middle, and high schools receiving salaries of about $2,000. However, public concern is growing with regards to their unique accent and non-native-English pronunciation, and it seems that replacements may soon be required. There is only a small number of Asian English teachers, including Koreans, Chinese, and Vietnamese, who are second generation Asians or adoptees who have lived in the United States or other English-speaking countries. The demand for English teachers in Vietnam, especially in the larger cities, is explosive, thus making it very easy to find work.

♦ English Teachers in Vietnam and HCMC: 대부분이 미국, 영국, 호주 출신이며 현재 초중고 공립학교 등에서 취업중인 월급 약 $2,000 정도면 되는 필리핀인들이 다수 있는 상태이나 그들의 독특한 억양과 비 원어민 발음으로 인해 교체필요성이 사회전반에 걸쳐 대두되고 있으므로 곧 교체될 것으로 보입니다. 한국인, 중국인, 베트남인 등 아시아인 영어교사는 소수이며 그들은 모두 미국 등 영어권 국가에서 살던 2세 교포 또는 입양되었던 사람들입니다. 베트남 특히 대도시에서의 원어민 영어강사/교사에 대한 수요는 가히 폭발적이며 취업이 매우 쉬운 상태에 있습니다.

♦ Living: From the Korean Lotte Mart to names that nobody knows, countless shopping malls, supermarkets, fast food chains, restaurant chains, etc. can be found everywhere, overwhelmingly more so than in the United States or Korea. Small Korean grocery stores can be found scattered around many areas, with several more in locations with denser Korean populations. In addition, businesses operated by Koreans include barber shops/hair salons, travel agencies, real estate agencies, and laundry services; however, local businesses usually offer lower prices, which may be preferable as long as highly technical skills are not required for the service you need.

♦ 생활: 한국의 롯데마트를 비롯 이름도 모르던 수많은 세계 각국으로부터 진출한 쇼핑몰들, 수퍼마켓들, 패스트푸드 체인들, 레스토랑 체인들 등이 있어 오히려 미국 또는 한국내의 상황을 압도해 나가는 것으로 보이고 있습니다. 소규모의 한국식품점들도 자주 눈에 띄며 특히 한인밀집지역엔 다수 있습니다. 이 밖에도 한인이 직접 운영하는 업소들로는 이발/헤어살롱, 관광여행사, 부동산에이전시, 세탁소 등이 있으나 고도의 기술을 요하는 경우가 아닐 경우에는 현지업소를 이용하면 매우 저렴합니다.

♦ Communication/Broadcasting/Utilities: Internet fees are quite low and connection speeds are the fastest in Southeast Asia, second only to Singapore. Mobile communication is also affordable, with 3G and other well-developed systems. The majority of the population uses smart phones or other mobile devices. Electricity, line telephones, gas, and water/plumbing systems are well-developed, but there are significant differences from region to region. The largely Korean-populated area of Phu My Hung is the best residential/commercial area in this regard within Vietnam, offering greater conveniences even than many residential areas of the United States or Korea. Cable television includes 3 Korean channels (KBS World, Arirang, and YTN) available 24 hours a day, along with dozens of the world's leading movie/sports/news/outdoor/science channels. In addition, special equipment may be used to watch a greater number of Korean channels.

♦ 통신/방송/유틸리티: 저렴한 비용에 제공되는 인터넷의 접속속도는 동남아에서 싱가포르 다음으로 빠르고 역시 부담없이 저렴한 모바일통신 역시 3G 등 잘 발달되어 있어 대부분의 국민들이 스마트폰 또는 다른 모바일기기를 사용하고 있습니다. 전기, 라인전화, 개스, 수도 등이 잘 발달되어 있으나 지역에 따라 큰 차이가 있고 한인밀집거주지역인 푸미흥지역은 베트남 전 지역에서 가장 잘 되어 있는 거주상업지역으로 웬만한 미국 또는 한국의 거주지역보다 훨씬 편리한 경우가 많은 지역입니다. 케이블티비 시청을 하면 KBS World, Arirang, YTN 등 3개의 방송이 24시간 시청 가능하며 이 밖에도 전 세계의 유수 영화/스포츠/뉴스/아웃도어/과학 등의 채널들이 다수 제공되어 오히려 미국 또는 한국 내에서 받는 서비스보다 우수할 수도 있습니다. 이 밖에도 특별기기를 사용할 경우 더 많은 한국의 채널들을 시청할 수가 있습니다.

♦ Koreans in Vietnam and HCMC: As of September 22, 2010, the Korean population is at approximately 100,000 in all of Vietnam, of which about 70,000 are in HCMC and on the rise. Most are small business proprietors, employees of an increasing number of Korean companies, along with their families, and students (and their families) residing temporarily to study abroad at various levels of educational institutions. The main Korean communities in HCMC are in two areas: PMH (Phu My Hung New Urban Area) and Cong Hoa, which is near Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

♦ Koreans in Vietnam and HCMC: 2010년 9월 22일 현재 베트남 전체에 10만명 정도, 호치민시에 7만명 정도 거주하고 있고 계속 증가추세에 있으며 대부분 소규모 자영업자, 날로 증가추세에 있는 한국계 회사들의 임직원 및 그 가족들, 교육을 위해 일시 거주하고 있는 각급 유학생들과 그 가족들로 구성되어 있습니다. The main Korean communities in HCMC are in two areas: PMH (Phu My Hung New Urban Area) and Cong Hoa, which is near Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

♦ Leisure: Although Vietnam's tourism is not as highly developed as in Thailand or other Southeast Asian countries, there are many famous tourist destinations and affordable packages. Tourists from all over the world flock to Vietnam especially for the cheap golf, massages, and colorful, delicious Vietnamese cuisine.

♦ Leisure: 베트남의 관광상품들은 아직 태국이나 여타 동남아국가들처럼 고도로 개발된 상태는 아니지만 유명한 관광지가 많으며 저렴한 관광비에 많은 관광객들이 전 세계에서 몰려들고 있습니다. 특히 저렴한 골프, 마사지, 다채롭고 맛이 좋은 베트남요리들은 세계인들이 선호하는 아이템입니다.

♦ Local safety and crime: With a very stable government and relatively low rate of violent crime, safety is not a problem as long as one uses common sense safety measures and lives an ordinary lifestyle. Locals tend to appear friendly and intimate, but this sociable nature may easily hide their lack of order, manners, and compliance with the law. It is necessary to be aware of this unique temperament in order to stay incident-/accident-free. Traffic accidents are also very common due to the yet insufficiently developed infrastructure and management systems, as well as severe traffic congestion.

♦ 현지에서의 안전과 범죄: 매우 안정된 정부와 비교적 낮은 강력범죄 발생율로 상식적인 안전의식을 가지고 평범한 생활을 할 경우 큰 문제 될 것이 없습니다. 가장 주의가 요구되는 사항은 현지인들의 친절/친밀해 보이는 사교성에 가려져 쉽사리 이해하기 어려운, 질서/준법의식/매너의 지나친 결여와 물불과 앞뒤를 가리질 않는 독특한 기질로서 이를 미리 숙지해야만 사건/사고 없는 생활이 가능합니다. 또 한가지 미리 알아야 할 사항은 아직 개발이 많이 안 된 인프라와 관리체계, 그리고 폭주하는 교통량에 의해 교통사고가 다발하고 있다는 점입니다.

♦ Particular criminal issues: Vietnam has some of the world’s toughest drug laws. Those convicted of possessing or selling more than 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kilograms of methamphetamine face the death penalty. Yet Vietnam is the major route of drug transport between Southeast Asia and China, thus requiring particular caution. In addition, the abduction, temptation, and trafficking of women for prostitution between countries is common. Foreign English teachers who are unaware of this and fail to take precautions occasionally fall into these temptations and are imprisoned.

♦ 범죄관련 특기사항: 베트남의 마약사범 처벌법은 세계에서 가장 엄격한 것 중의 하나로 600그램의 헤로인 또는 2.5킬로그램의 메타암페타민을 소지 또는 판매에 대한 유죄확정의 경우 무조건 사형에 처하도록 되어 있지만 동남아와 중국간의 마약운송 주요루트로 각별히 주의하지 않으면 안 될 지역입니다. 이 밖에도 국가간의 매춘을 위한 여성들의 납치, 유혹, 트래픽킹도 흔한 지역으로 이에 대해 미리 알고 각별히 대처하지 않을 경우 외국인 영어교사/강사들이 유혹에 빠지고 수감되는 경우가 간혹 발생해 오고 있습니다.
